Should you migrate from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8?

If you currently run Drupal 7 to power your website then you need to consider upgrading to Drupal 8 in the near future.

Presently most modern websites run on a CMS (content management system) that powers the content of your site, if you currently run Drupal 7 then you need to be prepared to upgrade to Drupal 8.

The Drupal 7 CMS enables us to make changes to the website content so keeping the CMS up to date is a fundamental matter. Some of us consider it easier to stick to the current version of our Drupal 7 CMS that runs our site and that is quite understandable, but on a long term basis out-dated CMS pose security risks to your site and its content.

Recently there’s been many questions and excitement online regarding the Drupal 8 release and Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 migration. It’s known that Drupal 7 will be supported until 2019, but it is just a rough estimate, so considering migrating  Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 in the next 12 months is recommended if you want to future proof your website. Migration is not necessary from a maintenance point of view at the moment, provided that Drupal 7 will be still security supported for approximately 2 years, but it is certainly worth considering if you want to have access to Drupal 8 new features.

These new features include:

  • 100% multilinguality
  • A responsive backend
  • In-place content editing
  • Object oriented code
  • New theme engine named Twig (PHP-based, fast, secure and flexible)
  • Automatic backing up of site configuration into a set of features
  • 5 completely new field types in Drupal 8 core (date, email, telephone, reference and link)
  • Adopting more modern PHP standards than Drupal 7
  • Quick Edit module in Drupal 8 core
  • Support for features sets (bundles)
  • Better support for accessibility
